The Detroit Lions’ offensive line is once again considered the best in the NFL for the 2024 season, but there is a question mark looming over the unit’s future, specifically concerning veteran guard Kevin Zeitler. Zeitler, who was signed as a free agent, has provided a significant upgrade over Jonah Jackson, who struggled with the Los Angeles Rams. Zeitler’s performance has more than justified the investment, but with him approaching free agency in 2025 and turning 35 years old around that time, the Lions may need to plan for his replacement.
As Zeitler nears free agency, the Lions will also have to consider the future of fellow guard Graham Glasgow, who will turn 33 in the summer of 2025 and has two years left on his contract. Glasgow’s performance has dipped this season, with his Pro Football Focus grade falling to below average, which could influence Detroit’s decision on whether to retain him. This leaves the Lions with the potential need to add a younger guard during free agency, particularly if both Zeitler and Glasgow leave the team.
One potential target for the Lions is Miami Dolphins guard Robert Jones, who will be just 26 years old next month. Jones has been a solid player throughout his career, and his age makes him an appealing option for the Lions. While he may not be as established as Zeitler, he could be a reliable replacement if Detroit decides to move on from one or both of their current guards. However, Jones’ Pro Football Focus grades aren’t quite as impressive as Zeitler’s, and he has allowed more pressures than Zeitler, making him a slight downgrade.
If the Lions believe Zeitler can continue to perform at a high level, they will likely bring him back. Even if they do not, they have a promising option in 2024 sixth-round pick Christian Mahogany, who impressed during his debut start in Week 16 in place of an injured Glasgow. Mahogany’s performance was solid enough to suggest he could be a future starter, meaning the Lions might not feel the immediate need to sign a new guard like Jones.
The Lions are unlikely to pursue Jones or another starting-caliber guard unless both Zeitler and Glasgow leave the team in the offseason. With Mahogany emerging as a viable option, Detroit has depth and flexibility on the offensive line, making the decision to overhaul the guard positions less likely. The team’s focus will likely remain on retaining Zeitler or continuing to develop Mahogany as a key piece of their offensive line moving forward.
