Auburn defeats Alabama in Tuscaloosa to maintain its top ranking.

Auburn and Alabama faced off for the first time as top-10 teams, with No. 1 Auburn securing a 94-85 victory over No. 2 Alabama. The matchup lived up to expectations, and the two teams are set to meet again in Auburn on March 8, potentially facing each other again in both the SEC and NCAA tournaments.

Auburn coach Bruce Pearl highlighted the importance of a strong start, as his team jumped out to an early nine-point lead. Despite Alabama’s comeback efforts, which included a loud and energetic atmosphere at Coleman Coliseum, Auburn managed to hold onto their advantage, with Pearl praising the competitive energy from both teams.

Alabama’s coach, Nate Oats, acknowledged Auburn’s key moments, including their ability to close out the first half strong and then start the second half with another surge. Though Alabama fought back to tie the game after being down by 14, they never managed to take the lead, marking the first time in 87 home games under Oats that they had not led during the game.

Johni Broome was a standout performer for Auburn, recording 19 points, 14 rebounds, six assists, two blocks, and a steal. After struggling with injuries earlier in the season, Broome showcased his all-around skills and made key plays, including scoring Auburn’s final two baskets, to lead his team to their first win over a top-two team since 1988.

The Tigers had balanced scoring with five players in double figures, including Denver Jones with 16 points. Despite some foul trouble with players like Dylan Cardwell and Chad Baker-Mazara fouling out, Auburn’s depth allowed them to maintain their lead. Alabama struggled with their shooting, making only five of 26 3-point attempts. Oats focused on the loss as a chance to refocus his team for their next matchup with Auburn, emphasizing the need for maturity and leadership.
