LOCKER ROOM LANDMINE: Jason Whitlock Warns That Brock Purdy’s Insane Contract Could Destroy 49ers’ Team Chemistry

Brock Purdy, who is currently under a modest 4-year, $3.7 million contract with the San Francisco 49ers, is set to become eligible for a contract extension after the 2024 season ends on January 5, 2025. Initially, there were expectations that Purdy could secure a lucrative extension worth $50 to $60 million annually, but recent developments have led to doubts about whether his performance justifies such a high figure. Given his low salary by NFL quarterback standards, any raise would position him among the top five highest-paid quarterbacks in terms of average annual salary.

However, Purdy’s inconsistent performance this season and the 49ers’ disappointing 6-10 record have led to skepticism about his worth. Analyst Jason Whitlock criticized the idea of paying Purdy $60 million per year, likening him to Dak Prescott and arguing that while Purdy is a solid quarterback, he isn’t worth such a hefty sum. Whitlock further suggested that such a contract could cause friction within the 49ers’ locker room, implying it would be a divisive decision for the team.

Statistically, Purdy’s 2024 season hasn’t been a disaster, but his numbers fall short of elite quarterback status. He has thrown for 3,864 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, with a quarterback rating of 67.8. While these stats are respectable, they haven’t translated into victories, leading to questions about his value moving forward. Additionally, Purdy is recovering from an ankle injury sustained against the Detroit Lions, which may impact the 49ers’ decision-making process.

Despite the concerns surrounding his performance, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has remained a staunch supporter of Purdy. Shanahan praised Purdy’s resilience and commitment, noting his hard work and determination to improve week by week. With the playoffs out of reach, Shanahan confirmed that Purdy would likely not play in the final game of the season against the Cardinals, choosing instead to prioritize his recovery for the future.

Those in favor of a more moderate contract, around $50-$55 million annually, point to Purdy’s strong 2023-24 season, where he posted a passer rating of 113.0, threw for 4,280 yards, and led the 49ers to the Super Bowl, though they lost to the Chiefs. While his 2024 season has been rocky, many still believe Purdy’s prior success and leadership deserve a significant raise, though not necessarily at the extreme figures initially projected.
